Installation & Compatibility

Is SmartGates compatible with my existing gate or garage door?

SG Anywhere connects via dry contact terminals, which are present on virtually every motorised gate controller, barrier motor and garage door opener — regardless of brand. If your system has a dry contact input (sometimes labelled "trigger", "open/close" or "impulse"), SG Anywhere works with it without touching your existing wiring.

Do I need a technician to install it?

No. SG Anywhere is designed for self-installation. You connect it to the dry contact terminals and a 12V DC power source on your existing controller — both accessible in virtually every control box. Most installations take under 30 minutes.

What exactly is a "dry contact"?

A dry contact is a pair of terminals that, when briefly short-circuited, trigger a command on the gate controller — typically open, close or stop. It is the universal command interface on virtually every gate controller. SG Anywhere closes this contact electronically, exactly as a wall button or remote control would.

Can I keep my existing remotes and wall buttons?

Yes, completely. SG Anywhere works in parallel with all existing access methods — remotes, wall buttons, keypads. Installing SmartGates adds smartphone control without removing or replacing anything.

Connectivity & Reliability

What happens if my internet connection goes down?

Remote control from outside your local network will not be available during an outage. However, your existing remotes, wall buttons and all other local access methods continue to work normally — SmartGates never disables them. The app reconnects automatically once the connection is restored.

What happens during a power cut?

SmartGates is powered from your gate controller's supply. During a power cut, both the gate motor and SmartGates will be offline — the same behaviour as any gate without a smart device. Most controllers have a manual release lever for exactly this scenario. Everything resumes automatically when power returns.

What if my phone battery is flat?

Your existing remotes and wall buttons remain fully operational at all times — SmartGates is additive, not a replacement for local access methods. If you rely solely on smartphone control, a backup power bank is recommended.

Does the gate still work if SmartGates loses its Wi-Fi connection?

Yes. Local access methods (remotes, wall buttons) are completely unaffected by SmartGates' connectivity state. Only remote app control from outside your network requires an active internet connection.

Access Management

Do my guests need to download an app to use an access token?

No app, no account, no password. Access tokens are sent as a simple web link by SMS or email. Your guest taps the link in any mobile browser — iOS, Android or any device — and the gate opens immediately. Nothing to install.

How do I revoke a guest's access immediately?

Open the SmartGates app, locate the token and tap Revoke. The link becomes invalid instantly from anywhere in the world. No delays, nothing to redistribute, no code to change.

Can I restrict access to specific hours and days?

Yes. Scheduled accounts let you define exactly which days and hours each person can open the gate. Outside that window, the gate ignores the command. This is ideal for employees, contractors and regular service providers.

What happens when an access token expires?

The link becomes inactive automatically at the set date and time — no action required. Expired tokens cannot be reused. Any attempt to use an expired link shows a "link expired" message.

How many users and tokens can I add?

There is no preset limit on the number of accounts or tokens — you can create as many as your subscription plan allows. Contact our team for details on plan capacity.

Monitoring

Can I see if my gate is open or closed?

Yes. SG Anywhere offers two monitoring modes: timing-based estimation (tracks motor run time to estimate position, zero extra hardware) and optional real-time sensor mode (connect a position sensor for absolute feedback). SG Drive Anywhere has full position monitoring built-in with no sensor required.

Will I know if something is blocking the gate from closing?

SmartGates can monitor your IR safety cells (photocells) in real time. If an obstacle is detected — a person, vehicle, plant or debris — the app shows the cell as "blocked" before you send the close command, preventing an unintended closing.

Can I see a log of who opened the gate and when?

Yes. Every command is logged with a timestamp and the user account or token that triggered it. The full history is accessible from the app and can be exported for audits or reporting.

Security

Can someone intercept or forward an access token link?

Tokens are time-bounded — they only work within the validity period you set. Even if a link is forwarded, it expires automatically and can be revoked instantly from the app. All communications are encrypted (HTTPS).

What if a former employee or ex-tenant still has access?

Simply delete or disable their account or token in the app — access is removed immediately. There is no shared code to change and no remote to collect. Each person has an individual credential that you control.

Is my data stored securely?

Yes. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. SmartGates does not sell or share your personal data with third parties. Refer to our Legal Notice for full details.
